We are sure you are aware of the devastating news regarding recent fire activity on both the Big Island and Maui. Fortunately, Hawaii County was able to contain the activity on our island. Kudo’s to Mayor Roth and the emergency responders of Hawaii Island for their efforts to abate disaster. As we all know, Maui was not so fortunate.
Help is pouring in from around our island community, the nation, and the world as leaders and residents of Maui assess their own losses and needs. You may be wondering what you can do to aid in the response and recovery of the Maui people. Here is the some information to assist you in determining how to help.
UPDATE (Mayor Roth's FB Post 8/13)
"Through our initial conversations with Maui stakeholders, it’s become clear that the outpouring of support from around the state and world has been incredible. However, they don’t yet have the teams in place to receive all of the stuff that people are sending over.
While we work diligently to establish a pipeline so that all the resources needed on Maui are received and distributed in a timely manner, it’s important to be mindful of our footprint.
Right now, these are our prescribed actions to minimize our footprint, while maximizing out impacts.
- Contribute to high-impact organizations
- Hold off on physical goods… for now
- Help house those who are displaced
- Share your talents when the time is right
- Stay put until Maui is ready for us
- Please remember that Maui’s recovery will be a marathon and not a sprint. We are only just at the beginning of this as a state, and we will all need to be prepared for the long haul."
